To recap our detox learning to date:
The more you poop, the more successful your detox plan is.
But that alone maketh not the detox. Otherwise, you'd get loads of people drinking crazy stuff like lemon-maple syrup-cayenne elixirs and only pooping by way of a colonic!
Oh wait.......that actually happens...... :(
To me, a good detox gives the liver and digestive system a rest and nourishes the body with an overdose of nutrients that it can use to repair and regenerate itself.
Smoothies are a great way to fulfill BOTH of these objectives. Here are my top two detox smoothie recipes - one sweet, one savoury to fix you up at either end of the day.
RISE & SHINE DETOX SMOOTHIE
1 cup spinach
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 small golden beet
1/2 apple
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 cup water
generous 1/2 tsp cinnamon
small knob of fresh ginger
1 tsp coconut oil
2 scoops Designs for Health Protein Powder
Put all ingredients in a high speed blender and whiz until smooth.
THE DETOX GAZPACHO
1.5 cup flat leaf parsley
1/2 ripe avocado
1 cup chopped fresh tomato
small piece red onion (less than a 1/4 piece)
1 garlic clove
juice of half lemon
1 cup ice cubes
1 cup water (or more depending on how thick you like it)
salt, pepper, cayenne powder as you like
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Put all ingredients in a high speed blender and whiz until smooth.
I want to draw your attention to TWO INGREDIENTS in these smoothies and why these are great to include in your detox programme.
BEETROOT: Traditionally, beets are valued for their support in detoxification and helping to purify the blood and the liver.
super high in GLUTAMINE that is very healing to the intestinal tract;
fibre rich and because you're having it in a smoothie and not in a juice, you are taking in all that fibre to help keep you regular;
the betalin pigments in beets support your body's detoxification process by binding to toxins so they can be excreted from your body.
2. PARSLEY: The master herb for detoxifying your kidneys.
chock full of minerals that help revitalize kidney function by removing unwanted toxins and fats away from this organ;
super diuretic that helps the body eliminate fluids naturally;
3x more vitamin C than oranges and twice the iron of spinach - making it a superfood for anyone wanting to get rid of unwanted inflammation and boost their energy;
super high in antioxidants that protect our heart from free radical damage.
Smoothies are a great detox tool and including these two ingredients will supercharge your elimination potential whilst nourishing and regenerating your body.
Happy detoxing!
