We Have to Start Educating Our Daughters About Birth Control

I'm all for birth control. And what you choose to do is between you, your partner and your doctor.  As a nutritionist, I'm just here to support you nutritionally.  But, the hormonal & nutritional side effects of the Birth Control Pill (BCP) are not well explained to the general female population of users.  And the majority of women start a hormonal birth control protocol when they are teenagers.

So, I thought I'd shed some light on this topic because the BCP not only affects your natural hormone production, it also results in nutritional deficiencies.  If these deficiencies are not addressed, you might find that:

  • you have difficulties coping with a high-stress environment;
  • you develop digestive issues, which later lead to illnesses related to nutritional deficiencies, e.g. allergies, adrenal fatigue;
  • you have difficulties conceiving;
  • you have a difficult pregnancy;
  • you have a traumatic and emotionally draining post-partum recovery.

We have to start educating our daughters about the effects of hormonal birth control options -- NOT SO THAT THEY SHUN THEM.  BUT SO THAT THEY CAN TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES PROPERLY WHILE THEY NEED THEM.  And recognize the really bad side effects before they spiral into bigger problems.

The nutrients most depleted by the Birth Control Pill are Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Magnesium and Zinc.

So if you're on the BCP or have a daughter that is, please make sure that they are eating a diet rich in these nutrients.  If you are vegetarian, then a B-Complex supplement with B12 and folate is a must.  And everyone on the BCP might want to consider supplementing the other nutrients as well, depending on your diet and where your food is sourced.

THIS IS A MOTHER-DAUGHTER ISSUE.  THIS IS AN EMPOWERMENT ISSUE.

Let's raise a new generation of nutritionally empowered women who really understand the choices they make and support their body through them.
